Native Australian ingredients provider Naturally Australian Products says the use of biomimicry has helped to significantly boost its product offering and highlight native species.

The distributor and raw material supplier has tapped into the resources of Native Extracts (NE),  a company that has been pioneering the use of cellular biomimicry technology to tap into new native Australian botanicals.

This cellular extraction is said to maintain the delicate cellular balance and rapidly alternates static and dynamic stages within a closed system, creating an equilibrium between a plant cell and the liquid medium that simulates the cell environment.

Avoids stress and degrading of extract

Ultimately the technology helps to enter the cell wall to diffuse phyto-active compounds into the liquid medium, without stressing or degrading the plant’s bio- matrix, delivering the full plant profile of water-soluble or oil-soluble phyto-compounds, as they exist in nature, in contrast to conventional methods that can place stress on the plant and compromise the compounds.

It is not more expensive than other processes. Cellular Extraction is rapid in order to effectively harness the actives before they deteriorate,” said Lisa Carroll Native Extracts CEO.

“Two variants are offered - Concentrate and Dilution 1:10 to cater for high end hero products as well as FMCG and wash on/off products that are price sensitive. This is deliberate so that price sensitive formulations still have access to natural molecules and can move away form cheap standardized synthetic mimicry and Cellular Extracts can be used at low percentages, even less than 1%.”

A quicker and more efficient process

The benefits are that a process that used to take many weeks and often degraded the efficacy of the extract has now been refined into quicker and far more efficient process.

“This is the first Multifunctional extract delivering anywhere from 3 to over 10 compounds and their derivatives per extract, giving us a natural ingredient that can benefit multiple application objectives in Anti-aging, Hair Care, Brightening, Teenage/Acne categories and more,” Carroll said.

On top of this it is also said to be a far more eco-friendly process, with the process taking approximately two and half hours, requiring minimal energy to complete and not requiring any sort of harsh chemicals.

First comprehensive Australian ingredient hub

“Partnering with NE allows NAP to offer the US market the first comprehensive Australian Ingredient hub,” said Jacqui Rathner, COO of Naturally Australian Products.

“NE rounds out the product offering to include the most exciting naturally derived water soluble blueprints of unique Australian species as well as highly concentrated unique freeze dried powders. now NAP can offer the US everything an Australian botanical source can offer - essential oils, fatty acid profiles, the newest water soluble discoveries and powders of unique potent species.”

Naturally Australian Products is expecting to increase its portfolio of ingredients offerings alongside the expansion of this technology, and believes that the impact will also be felt across the naturals segment.

“It gives the industry real possibilities for new discoveries of actives and new species, but new look into the cell of old popular favorites - traditional herbal extracts are being created with greater profiles of actives and their derivatives, precursor compounds, greater understanding of profiling and potentially establishing more detail on monograms,” Rathner said.
