Ball adds shelf appeal to aerosols with new matte and gloss effect
In a market where the shelf appeal of packaging is everything, Ball has launched a technology aimed at giving a new printing effect for aerosols.

Called Matte & Gloss printing technology, it is said to provide added impact and dimension for extruded aerosol cans typically used for hair care, shaving, deodorants and some skin care products.

The company claims that the dual effect of this technology serves to not only give additional visual impact, but also adds to the sensory effect by giving the can’s exterior a different kind of texture compared to conventional technologies.

Contrasting visual and sensory effect

This effect is because the matte and gloss finishes incorporated into the technology provide both a contrasting visual element, together with a smoother feel to the gloss finish and a slightly more textured feel to the matte finish.

In addition, Ball also claims that the visual element helps to provide additional contrast whereby the gloss reflects light and the matte serves to provide a more subdued look, essentially shadowing the gloss.

This finish can be used to provide contrast between logos, branding and packaging design, emphasizing the branding message in a new and innovative way.

Adding to a wide range of finishes and effects

Other packaging technologies that Ball currently offers for aerosol packaging include tactile, pearlescent and hot stamping capabilities.

“We are able to leverage our cross-enterprise expertise to continually innovate and introduce industry-leading solutions, like our new Matte & Gloss printing technology, which help our customers build and differentiate their brands," said Dan Rabbitt, vice president and general manager, Ball Aerocan America.

Currently Ball is the largest producer of three-piece steel aerosol cans in North America, Europe’s leading supplier of extruded aluminum aerosol cans, as well as being the largest worldwide supplier of aluminum slugs that are extruded to make such cans.
