FDA invites comment over cosmetics labeling

Related tags Cosmetics Label Regulation

The FDA is looking for industry comment on its cosmetics labeling regulations, specifically in regard to its proposed extension of the current information collect request (ICR) in place at the moment, Chemical Watch reports.

The FDA note that at present, regulation requires that “cosmetic manufacturers, packers, and distributors disclose information about themselves or their products on the labels of their products.”

This gives the body authority to regulate the labeling of cosmetics: if not met, the rules can render a cosmetic product ‘adulterated or misbranded’.

The extended request will require ingredients to be listed on the cosmetic product’s label. It will also make a statement of the product’s identity obligatory, along with the net quantity of contents.

According to Chemical Watch, the FDA is inviting comment from the industry until 16 June, on whether “the proposed collection of information is necessary for the FDA to execute its authority properly; whether its estimate of business impacts is accurate; and how the quality, utility, and clarity of information can be optimized.”
