First Glimpse: The ADF&PCD cosmetics and fragrance packaging tradeshow opens in NYC

The annual aerosol and beauty / fragrance packaging tradeshow is in New York City this week, helping packing professionals solve problems, discover new innovations, and network with the industry’s top-tier experts.

2017 is only the second year this show has opened in the States and already ADF&PCD is clearly a place where packaging pros connect and winning designs take center stage.

The show, which opened yesterday, runs through the end of today, September 7th at 5pm. Interested attendees can register on site at the Altman Building in New York City (135 West 18th Street, near 6th Avenue).

Solutions

The ADF&PCD event is really “two worlds in one show,” Christelle Anya, event director for EasyFairs (the shows organizer) tells Cosmetics Design. And, as she points out, this meeting of the aerosol world and the beauty packaging world makes for a great opportunity to find inspiration, envision technology transfer, and meet with a range of suppliers that otherwise wouldn’t be in the same place at the same time.

This is but one aspect of the ADF&PCD’s design for the trade show. Still fairly new to the States, ADF&PCD is shaping up to be an interactive platform where packing professionals meet to share ideas, brainstorm solutions, and network.

The event organizers are keen to hear about packaging industry pain points and to develop additional conference programming or show features that would make your job easier. Feel free to share your challenges and needs with the team via email at nqs-cpq@nqs-cpq.pbz.

Winners

Both the ADF (Aerosol & Dispensing Forum) and the PCD (Packaging of Cosmetics & Design) shows have their own innovation awards.

In a ceremony held yesterday afternoon at the event, the winners of each (in several categories) were announced and then feted in at an on-site cocktail reception.

Winners of ADF awards this year were: Coppertone Whipped Lotion Sunscreen and Kanebo – Evita Beauty Whip Soap in a tie in the personal care category; and Ball Corporation - L’Oreal Men Expert in the industrial and technical application category.

And, this year’s PCD awards went to Aveda’s Tulasara Wedding Masque in the skin care category, Garnier Fructis renovation in hair care, Calvin Klein CK One Gold in fragrance, and Bobbi Brown Liquid Lip Art Stick in makeup.

Trends

From the first conversations Cosmetics Design had with exhibitors in both the ADF and PCD sections of the trade show, a few beauty packaging trends stand out.

For example, natural beauty, clean beauty, green beauty, etc., has no doubt made its mark on packaging. Makers of primary packaging, lids and toppers, dispensing mechanisms, and GWP items (that’s ‘gift with purchase’; so, makeup bags, tins, totes, and the like) are all getting requests for recycled, recyclable, and natural packaging options. Without a moment’s hesitation, when asked about industry trends, Kathleen De Angelo, commercial assistant at EuroTextile, told Cosmetics Design that bags and packages made with paper pulp are in high demand from her clients in the organic beauty space.
